September's Class Notes: Alumni in the News

Here are your fellow Tigers in the news this month.
Shelbie Freeman '88 has recently been diagnosed with stage-4 breast cancer. Her classmates have started a blog to support Shelbie and her family.

Sam Smith '99 is in the news for his article on the promotional posters that accompany Woody Allen films and his redesign of the poster promoting Allen's latest film, Blue Jasmine.

Josh Strupp '11 has created a video documenting his recent stay in Nairobi, Kenya. The video shines some light on the conditions of the Kibera Slum there.

Travis Brandon '95 has returned to Nashville to teach at Belmont University's Law School

Amy Kurland '73, retired owner and manager of the The Bluebird Café listening room, will be presented with the Frances Williams Preston Mentor Award at the 43rd Anniversary Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony at the Music City Center on October 13.

Grant Garmezy '03 and Emily McGrew '03 have an exhibit up at Jack Yacoubian Jewelers in Franklin, TN. 

Julia Garrison '08 performed at the Kennedy Center for National Dance Day as part of the professional hip-hop dance company Culture Shock DC. You can see Julia and Culture Shock at the 51 minute mark of this video.

Ben Goldberg '98 and Max Goldberg '01 are in Details magazine's Insider's Guide to Nashville and in the NY Times magazine blog Feeling for Nashville, New and Improved. Their much-anticipated new venue Pinewood Social is to open this fall. 

Joey Capparella '09 graduated from Rice University this May. In June, Joey got a job as a Web Editor at Automobile Magazine which is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He writes daily news articles for their blog section called "Rumors" (rumors.automobilemag.com) and manages their Facebook page (facebook.com/automobilemag). Joey also has a few articles in the latest print edition of the magazine as well. It's the October 2013 issue of Automobile Magazine, out in newsstands now. 

Darek Bell '92 and Andrew Webber '92's Corsair Distillery are on the cover of Whiskey Advocate and were featured in USA Today. Read all about their recent successes in their newsletter.

Organic dairy farmer Meg Moynhan Stuedemann '84 was interviewed on Boston's NPR station about the state of organic farming in the US.

Sara Garmezy '13 is in the news for being on the Yale Golf Team, which defended Yale's Dartmouth Invitational Title.
