Former Students Gather to Honor Polly Fields

Former USN teacher Polly Fields, who passed away last month, made quite an impact on a number of her students. Recently they gathered to honor her through a memorial gift to USN's history department, sharing personal memories of one of their favorite teachers.
A group of twenty-one former students of USN teacher Polly Fields, led by Mark Levine '84, collected funds to purchase two special framed historical charts in her honor. On September 4, a group of these alumni gathered with USN faculty and staff in the Payne Library Room to share their memories of Polly Fields. They presented their memorial gift to Pat Miletich and Vince Durnan.

Watch the accompanying video to see those warm and funny memories alumni of the classes of 1979-1986 shared. Please feel free to share your memories by posting a comment on this article. Read what some of your fellow alumni wrote in the comments on her Tennessean obituary. You can read the view book comments here.  You can also make a donation in her honor or buy a paver in her name if you feel a special connection with Ms. Fields and were not part of this memorial gift.

What a wonderful video! Jogged so many memories. Ms. Fields was the first teacher who shook me out of my sheltered educational box and challenged me to think deeper. She also gave me cause to rethink my fashion choices when she said I looked like the Lady of Bath! (it was the red stockings). And, history came to life with her constant references to the men she knew in each city we studied... Excellent memorial for a truly excellent teacher.
