Leaving USN

After six years as USN's Alumni Director, I have decided to venture a new adventure.
Working at USN (particularly working with all the PDS and USN alumni) has been a great joy. It is hard to look back over my time here without being wistful.

I feel proud of what we (I would be dishonest if I didn't say “we” because of all the work by my officemates and volunteers) have accomplished. I also know for a fact that the alumni program will continue to grow and thrive long after I have gone. The alumni dinners, Reunion and other events, the newsletter, and all the other ways USN keeps its bonds with the alumni will keep getting better and better.

The alumni of PDS and USN are a testament to the school. I hope that you all realize what an accomplished and amazing group you are. During Convocation 2008, Kate Ransom ’75 exhorted the seniors to embrace the “broadest” understanding of success. Your lives are the standard of success in its truest, broadest sense.

You inspired me with the courage to take on my new adventure.

For a few years I have made and sold pimento cheese and pimento cheese biscuits. It is time to turn that hobby into a going concern. Over the summer, Professor Bailey’s Spicy Pimento Cheese (and biscuits) will begin to appear in stores around Nashville (and very likely the Farmers Market). Even if you don’t think you like pimento cheese, you’ll like Professor Bailey’s. Make the time this summer to seek it out. (If you have had Professor Bailey's, please use the comments section to tell people what you think).

In lieu of sending flowers, please celebrate my departure by continuing to support USN and by eating more pimento cheese (and biscuits).

Tom -- It has been a pleasure knowing you. When you get out to San Francisco again, let me know. I wish you the best of everything, always.
  • Susan Cowperthwaite
Tom, you have certainly made epic contributions to the USN community as a student & again as the alumni director! Wishing you much success on your "venture adventure". Your yummy concoctions will surely sell well! So excited for you. Susan
  • Jim McLaughlin
Tom, This is the beginning of something big. You shared your special pimento cheese with me and I took some home to Philadelphia where it was a big hit. I knew you would be the Big Cheese one day. Good luck. Will miss your USN/PDS presence.
  • Lara Levinson
Tom, I'm going to miss having you at USN too and know if you're behind it the business will be a huge success. I'm going to introduce it to London so plan a trip and you can market it as another Nashville export like the country music they love here!
  • Steven Wilkinson
Tom, Good luck in your new endeavor. Professor Bailey's! Great name for the product! I will definitely get some the next time I am in the area. Let me know when it comes to this area. I will be happy to promote in my social network. Steve
  • Teresa Standard
Oh Possum! You have been as refreshing and vital as a morning cup of coffee. I will miss you very much but will be a loyal customer of Prof. Bailey!
  • Ben Princehorn
Best of luck , Tom, good for you. I will try pimento cheese for the first time in my life to support you.
  • Virginie Goffaux
OK - so, pimento cheese does not currently appear on my grocery list, nor is it sold in Belgian food stores. Don't really know if my palate is ready for it, but if you have a website and international deliveries, I promise to order some, love it and introduce this Tennessee delicacy to my kids and friends. Will miss you! All the best, Virginie
  • Donna Tanner
Tom, I have really enjoyed your postings for USN and all I have seen that you and the Alumni Dept.have done. I am a great fan of pimiento cheese as well and can't wait to try yours. I'll look for you and them the next time I am in Nashville. Buena suerte!
  • Faith Moore
You've done a super job for PDS/USN and I'm sure your next endeavor will be great too. Next time I'm in Nashville I look forward to sampling your food. All the best Tom. - Faith '78
  • Steven Way
Thanks for all, Tom! I'll see you at the Farmer's Market.
  • Patrick Gilbert
Tom, Give that Mrs. Grissom some competition. I wish you the best of luck. From one pimento cheese fan to another, Patrick '76
  • Jonathan Glaser
Best of luck to you Tom - if you want Tokyo distribution, I'm your man. You and your team did great work for USN and its a better place for it. Thanks for everything.
  • Robert Burko
Sorry to see you go, Tom, but best of luck in your new venture. March 18-19, 2014. Those are the dates for the World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison, WI. They have a spreadable cheeses category. Are you going to enter? I don't live too far from Madison so I hope to see you there.
  • Adam Boklage
Sorry to see you go, Tom. I'll miss seeing a familiar name on all of the alumni correspondence! Bravo for being brave enough to pursue a passionate endeavor. I'll have to ask my sister to seek out some PBSPC to send to me, and I will definitely pass the word to all of the rest of my family still in Nash-Vegas to try it.
  • Perry Happell
Thomas--Count me among those who never liked pimento cheese, until I tried PB's. I can't thank you enough for helping us pull the Class of '61 back together. Your presence at the Alumni Board meetings made them truly enjoyable. I'm glad this is not goodbye, but just "see you later in another venue."
  • Betsy Hoffman
We will miss you around here but your pimento cheese biscuits are addictive! Good luck to you! I am glad we got a chance to reconnect. Thanks for all your hard work to our school!
  • Alan Lancaster
Definitely best of luck on your new venture, Tom! I'll miss seeing your name attached to all the alumni communications and updates; you've done a great job over the last 6 years. Your shoes will definitely be big ones to fill!
  • Yarrot Benz
I have so much enjoyed getting to know you through the alumni affairs, Tom. You brought additional smart color to this wonderful school and I hope this tasty adventure brings great stories with it. -Yarrott
  • Connie Heard
The pimento cheese was wonderful at the Pen Pal luncheon. Not your average school lunch! Best of luck with everything, Tom. I have enjoyed our interactions with all things alum, and hope you enjoy your new endeavor even more.
  • Barbara Garrow
Tom- You are great as an alumni director and here is a toast to a successful cheese and biscuit enterprise. I hope you will sell them in East TN.
  • Cathy Goodwin
We are SO sorry to see you go! You'll at least have to let me interview you about your career for one of my teleseminars ... you're a great career change story! (Good PR too.) Come to Philly and bring cheese biscuits.
  • Mike Bennett '61
Tom, I am sad to see you go. Even with the excitement of the new venture, I imagine you are sorry to say goodbye, too. My guess is that there will be many excellent candidates who will want to take up this position because you have filled it so well. Not only have you made tremendous progress in alumni relations, but you have made it look like a lot of fun. (I am sure there were moments that were not fun, but those of us on this end were never aware of them.) Lots of people would like to have a job like this. Let's hope one of them can be found who can do it as well or nearly so.
  • Scott Ghertner
Only an alum from the Class of '85 would have the courage to attempt to corner the pimento cheese market. We will miss you Tom, but this is a noble cause indeed. USN will not be the same without you at your desk!
  • Mimi Hall
Sorry you're leaving us "older" alums ... but happy for your new venture. I'll miss your energy, enthusiasm, and great personality. Best wishes for a happy and successful future. BTW, I love pimento cheese and will be on the look out for your gourmet product.
  • Marnie Criley
USN's loss is the food world's gain. Professor Bailey's pimento cheese is so good that I am introducing it in Missoula, Montana where they have never even heard of pimento cheese. Tom and I will be rich!
  • Sherri Birdsong King
Thrilled to hear about your new venture. USN will certainly miss you as will all the alumni, but you must do what your heart desires. Can't wait to get some Professor Bailey's. I love a good pimento cheese!! Sherri '76
  • Kurt Maier
HOLY CRAP, THAT IS SOME GOOD PIMENTO CHEESE!!!!!
  • Janet Noble
Our loss at USN/PDS is a "gain" for the world of Pimento Cheese and our waistlines! I know first hand it is delicious and has "zip." So, Tom Bailey, in spite of the vow from 1963, we are going to have to let you go on into a culinary adventure, and Reunions will continue with your spirit hovering over us. Thank YOU.
  • Mia Mihal Faxon
I am sure that the legendary status of the Class of 1985 will continue without your constant tending as all good and true things do, but it will be a bummer to receive alumni correspondence without thinking of you on the other end, personally sending out all the love and warmth to us, individually. I expect to show up in Nashville with some regularity over the summer and will be counting on you for entertainment as well as pimento cheese and biscuits. Well done, Thomas. See you soon!
  • Marlene Yancey
I am so excited for you. You did a fabulous job at USN and that same energy will make your new aventure great success. Now I will actually pay for your terrific LOW FAT Pimento Cheese. For anyone who hasn't tried it yet, it is incredible. We will see you soon!
  • Chad Schmidt
Congrats Tom! You can never have (or make) too much pimento cheese.
  • Kathy Harrell
I know your business will be a great success! Glad I had the chance to meet you (when my brother Luther was here and spoke at PDS/USN graduation) and get back in touch with all of the good things happening at the school. Take care.
  • Susan Yeagley
Legendary! This is perhaps the best e-mail ever! How can I get my California paws on these mouth-watering cheese biscuits? Couldn't be happier for you! Remember, it's never "cheesy" to follow your dreams. (Although that last line was......) Go get 'em, Tom!!
  • Sibley Edwards
Tom, good luck in all you do! I especially like the ravioli that Lazzaroli's makes with your pimento cheese. Spicy and delish! You are the best. We will miss you but you deserve to try out new adventure and not stay here just for us... even though we wish you would and will miss you tremendously. Lots of love and good wishes for a prosperous new endeavor.
  • Carla Flexer
Great luck and good wishes! Can't wait to try it!
  • Judy Hopton Lawrence
Tom, You will be missed! But I'm so excited about your pimento cheese! I will seek it out and think of you! I know it will be a great success!

  • Gwen Colley
I have had the great privilege of tasting Professor Bailey's Spicy Pimento Cheese; and my only regret is that I live so far from Nashville and can only sate my craving but twice a year. I wish you the best of luck in your new business venture, Tom! I only see success in your future. I recommend that everyone support Tom's business, if only for your own selfish epicurean pleasure.
  • Kim Collins
Tom, I will miss getting to see you every so often at USN dinners in NYC - please consider launching your business up here so you have reason to keep visiting - I want to try your cheese/buscuits! Much success to you!
  • Reed Hummell
Congratulations on your new endeavor and a job well-done at USN. We are all grateful for your efforts.
  • David Seachrist
Dear Tom! Martha just forwarded this announcement from her work email. She is a BIG pimento cheese fan so you can count on me to support that addiction (er i mean, forward your business interests along)! Could you please expand your product line with a non-spicy version. You could do a test market around Christmas Time and call it Prof. Bailey's St. Nick. Christmas in Prison Spread. I bet John Prine would buy it and i know we would. Sorry that you are leaving the alumni director postion but really excited for you new prospects! Yours truly, David Seachrist
  • Paula Underwood Winters
Good luck with your new endeavors! It's been great working with you on reunion parties. Keep in touch.-Paula
  • Allison Duke
You will be greatly missed but I'm excited to hear of your new adventure!! And I LOVE pimento cheese! Can't wait to try it out. Please let us know where we can purchase it this summer! Best of luck to you.

  • Helen Baker
Best of success, Professor Bailey! I can't wait to try the pimento cheese and biscuits. You'll be missed at USN.
  • Alan Perlman
    Epic alumni email. Congrats, Tom!
  • Shulamith Walker
Pitifully, I have yet to take my first needed taste of Professor Bailey's Spicy Pimento Cheese. But with exceeding confidence in the person of young Tom Bailey and his great taste in clothes, I highly recommend we favour this cheese as the standard in Pimento cheese. Do well, Professor! Thank you for your work at USN.
  • Amy Green
What exciting news, Tom! Sending you the very best wishes on making Professor Bailey's a 'new' Nashville (and beyond) tradition! I will miss your e-mails and postings, but will seek you out at the Farmer's Market! Amy '74
  • Tory Fitzgibbon
