Where Are They Now?

A look in on the class presidents of the '70s with Manuel Zeitlin '72 and Andrea Barach '76.
The 1970s at PDS/USN
The changes and upheaval that marked the United States generally in the seventies were reflected in our institution particularly when Peabody Demonstration School became University School of Nashville in 1975.

President of the PDS Senior Class of 1972 Manuel Zeitlin, remembers the 70s “It was a strange time – the Vietnam War [was] winding down, but in our minds and fears.”

Andrea Barach, president of the Class of 1976 (the first to graduate from USN), recalls, “Activism was in the air.  It was the thing to do back then.”  Students congregated on the wall on Peabody’s campus directly across the street from the front doors of University School.  “They always tried to kick us off the wall. School politics took place on the wall,” says Barach.

Class Presidents of the 1970s—still connected to USN
While you may remember Manuel Zeitlin and Andrea Brach from their days as your Senior Class President, you may not be familiar with their current roles in the Nashville Community and connections to the USN campus.

Manuel Zeitlin now owns Manuel Zeitlin Architects in Nashville, TN.  He and his firm are responsible for the design of the USN cafeteria renovation and expansion completed in 2011. The project included an overhaul of the kitchen and food service areas and a mezzanine level with casual seating designed to encourage high school students to use the cafeteria for lunch.     They are currently working on the design of the USN Centennial Project, which will create a new entrance for the school from the 19th Avenue Parking Lot.  Manuel Zeitlin Architects has designed many recognizable projects in the residential, commercial and institutional sectors of the Nashville community, and Mr. Zeitlin is “very proud of projects like the Nashville Youth Opportunity Center, The Nashville Holocaust Memorial, and the original masterplan for The Gulch.”

He and his wife Janice are co-owners of Zeitgeist Gallery, which showcases works by both established and new artists in a variety of media.  Mr. Zeitlin has two children and his hobbies include writing poetry, printmaking, gardening.   His former classmates may find it as hard to believe as he does, but his newest passion is golf.

Like Mr. Zeitlin, Andrea Barach still has connections to USN.  Her son Nathan Schine graduated from USN in 2009.  Nathan received the prestigious Stanford Moore Award, which was created in honor of USN alumnus and Nobel Laureate Stanford Moore.  Her daughter, Miriam, a pastry chef in New York City, also attended USN for lower school.

Andrea Barach is now a Partner in Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, one of Nashville’s largest law firms.  Her practice areas include health care, long term care, real estate development and finance.   She is a 30 year veteran in the legal field.

Ms. Barach enjoys traveling and has visited locales such as Hong Kong, Mongola, the Galapagos Islands, and Machu Picchu.  In between trips to exotic destinations, she and her husband spend their traveling time visiting their children.
