Authors Gather at USN to Launch Centennial Book

The writers who contributed an essay to The Same River Twice: A Century of Reminiscences from Peabody Demonstration School-University School of Nashville gathered at USN Wednesday evening to launch the book into the world.
Alumni, teachers, former teachers, parents of alumni, and friends of USN filled the auditorium on September 17 to hear four of the writers read selections from their essays: David Ewing '85, Robert K. Massie '46, David Vise '78, and Ann Meador Shayne '81.

Also in the auditorium were their fellow contributors Julie Reichman '70, history teacher Pat Miletich, former teacher and administrator Heber Rogers, and former director Harvey Sperling. Vince Durnan, who served as the master of ceremonies, wrote the last chapter in the book.

Local historian David Ewing revealed his theory that Tennessee Williams went to kindergarten at PDS in its earliest days. Robert Massie remembered being in football practice on the back field when he heard the news that President Roosevelt had died. David Vise told of the dark day--August 19, 1974--when Peabody College announced it was closing the Demonstration School. Ann Shayne wondered if PDS in the 1970's was "weird? or not weird?"
